The main characteristic of this disease is the formation of plaques that narrow the lumen of the vessel. However, atherosclerosis is not the only cause of vasoconstriction. For example, various causes may be involved in renal artery stenosis, such as vasculitis and fibromuscular dysplasia. Nonetheless, atherosclerosis remains one of the major problems associated with it. By itself, renal artery stenosis leads to issues with blood supply to the kidneys and can be one of the causes of kidney failure. In our review, we examined in detail the pathology of atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis, focusing on diagnostic methods and treatment strategies.
