Biological Effects of Β-Glucan
Description
Natural products, useful in preventing or even treating diseases, have been sought throughout the history of mankind. One of the most promising molecules fullfilling these aims is Β-glucan. The better use of Β-glucan is slowed by the same problem common to other natural products: in nature, they represent a complex mixture of individual ingredients. Therefore, the evaluation of glucan properties has to focus not only on biochemical characteristics and biological activities, but also on adequate isolation techniques offering us the highly purified molecules. This Special Issue represents a comprehensive review of several topics important for the understanding of Β-glucan biological and biochemical activities. In addition, several less known effects such as role in gene regulation or effects as probiotics are covered.
